Welcome back to my new short series The Last Matriarchy!

Chapter 2

The Umoja, Kenya

The women of Umoja stand together in an eternal bond of sisterhood against a common enemy - patriarchy! Picture courtesy: umojajewellery.com

The most unique thing about the Umoja village is men are banned from the territory. Umoja is home to Kenyan women who are united by their trauma of rape, mutilation, domestic violence, or other gender-based crimes.

This village is a true definition of ‘no man’s land’. It is a place where the maternal feminine spirit flows unhindered amongst this tribe of women where community and balance are more important than competition.

Decades together they have weathered the storms of social isolation that comes with being a victim of sexual violence. Umoja still stands true to its name - Unity!
